Oracle buys drug safety software company Relsys

Software giant Oracle has acquired Relsys International, a provider of drug safety and risk management solutions with analytics for the health sciences industry. Relsys' software supports adverse event reporting, risk management, and data analysis for pharmaceutical, biotechs, CROs and medical device companies. Relsys' software competes directly with Oracle's own AERS software, which performs similar functions. But despite Oracle's size, Relsys and several other smaller companies rule the pharmaceutical space. The acquisition will help Oracle get a better handle on the growing business of tracking and reporting adverse events. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

This buyout continues Oracle's strategy for buying up smaller, industry-focused companies for an affordable price. Observes the Wall Street Journal, "Oracle will likely follow a similar pattern with Relsys as it has with its other recent moves: use Relsys's product to court pharmaceutical companies, and then try to sell even bigger deals for other Oracle products once they're hooked."

"The health sciences industry is increasing investments in software that provide greater transparency into drug safety and help improve the overall safety of therapies," said Neil de Crescenzo, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Oracle Health Sciences. "With the addition of Relsys, Oracle is uniquely positioned to help our customers improve drug safety by delivering a comprehensive software solution that enables our vision of integrated safety and risk management supported by advanced analytics."
