Indian biotech, state partner on $20M park

India's Bharat Biotech International and the state of Orissa have entered into a public-private partnership to construct a $20 million technology park for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Orissa, located on India's east coast, has allocated 55 acres for the project, which is expected to be completed in 8 years. Ten acres of the site has been reserved for a Biotechnology Incubation Centre to be used by researchers, entrepreneurs and students. The venture is the first of its kind in Orissa, but state governments all over India have been creating incentives and investing in initiatives and infrastructure to benefit from the growing biotech and pharma industries.

Bharat Biotech specializes in the research, development and manufacture of vaccines and biotherapeutics, but has also assisted in the development and commercialization of technology parks in India, according to a report by Outsourcing-Pharma.

"We are delighted that the Government of Orissa has acknowledged our competence and awarded this prestigious project to BBIL," said Dr Krishna Ella, chairman and managing director of Bharat Biotech. "Our task is to focus on rapid development of this park by developing core infrastructure and technology to enable establishment of new companies whereby new local entrepreneurs in the biotechnology field will be created."
